When in Rome (and Florence, and Venice): Why Travel is the Ultimate Design Education

There are few places in the world more iconic than Italy. And after years of helping my clients design their dream homes, I decided it was time to design something just for myself: a trip to Italy, not just as a tourist, but as a woman rediscovering joy, connection, and, yes—color palettes.

As the founder of KTJ Design Co., I’m usually sharing polished project photos or practical tips on kitchen layouts. But today, I’m pulling back the velvet curtain for something more personal—because this trip changed me. And I believe that’s what great travel does—it expands your mind, your heart, and in my case, your mood boards.

Roman Ruins & Designer Revelations

Ancient architecture inspiration in interior design

My journey began in Trastevere, the soulfully charming neighborhood of Rome. We stayed at the Donna Camilla Savelli, a former Baroque convent turned luxury hotel—a visual metaphor for timeless transformation. The architecture was grand, the streets lively, and dinner at Oste Nostro was the perfect welcome to la dolce vita.

On our walking tour, I stood in awe beneath the Pantheon‘s dome—still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world—and climbed the Spanish Steps like I was in a scene from an old movie. I tossed a coin into the Trevi Fountain, more than a touristy ritual—it was a small wish for clarity and courage. It’s one thing to study Roman engineering in a textbook, but to walk across stones worn down by centuries is a whole other education.

Our archeologist guide mentioned that the white Carrara marble seats of the Colosseum were “borrowed” (aka salvaged) and are now the stairs of the Vatican. As an interior designer who often sings the praises of natural marble, this was my mic-drop moment. If marble can handle gladiators, emperors, popes, and two millennia of footsteps, surely it can survive a family kitchen.

Design Lessons from the Vatican to the Vineyards

Luxury interior design inspired by Italy

Thursday was a deep dive into Florentine grandeur and the eternal artistry of Vatican City. The Sistine Chapel felt more like a sacred museum of color theory—each fresco a masterclass in saturation, composition, and mood. I was especially drawn to the Byzantine golds and moody jewel tones—surprisingly similar to the palettes I instinctively return to in my own work. Turns out, my “signature style” might just be Renaissance reborn.

After three whirlwind days in Rome, we hopped on a train to Florence. A city that stole my designer heart. Staying at the Tivoli Palazzo Gaddi Firenze felt like living inside a painting. We wandered the Piazza della Signoria, passed the stately Duomo, and admired Brunelleschi’s elegant lines at the Ospedale degli Innocenti. Florence is proof that design, when done right, tells a story of its time—while always looking forward.

Pasta, Wine, and Color Palettes

Saturday was all about indulgence—Tuscan style. At Tenuta Torciano in San Gimignano, we cooked, we laughed, we drank wine (okay, I sipped—it was 11am), and we learned the beauty of simplicity. Handmade pasta, Chianti in the sun, and conversations that wandered as much as we did. The rustic charm of the farmhouse, the patina of the old stone, the faded terra cotta tiles—all of it is what I call “effortless layering.” The kind of vibe I strive for in my clients’ homes.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without a few treasures: a sleek Italian leather jacket (grazie, Florence) and a case of wine I plan to serve with homemade ravioli recreated from the class with my family.

Venice: A Floating Finale

Venetian style and elegance in luxury design

By Sunday, I thought I’d seen it all. Until Venice swept me off my feet (almost literally, those cobblestone streets are no joke). From our hotel, Splendid Venice, we explored St. Mark’s Basilica, strolled Burano Island to admire Murano glass, and glided through the canals on a gondola ride that ended with a golden sunset.

Venice taught me that elegance can be whimsical. The bold marble patterns in Doge’s Palace, the soft reflections of buildings dancing on water, the ornate facades next to humble homes. It was opulence without pretense, much like the kind of luxury I aim to create at KTJ Design Co. refined, but never stuffy.

Beyond the Beauty: What This Trip Meant to Me

Personal growth through travel and creativity

This wasn’t just a trip. It was a milestone. My first time traveling solo since losing my husband. I joined Scout Escapes, a travel group for women 40+, and met four incredible souls—Shellie, Hollye, Jennifer, and Anne, our host and resident sommelier. Shellie and Hollye started in public accounting like I did (funny how life brings us full circle), and we bonded over shared memories, teenage grandkids, and late-night giggles.

I averaged six miles and twenty flights of stairs per day. I tripped on cobblestones (more than once), fell into a pasta coma, and learned I’m in love with Botticelli’s art. I shared my story, listened to theirs, and returned with a full heart and a hundred design ideas.

The Takeaway: Design is About More Than Pretty Rooms

Travel-inspired interior design for discerning homeowners

As a designer, I constantly draw from architecture, fashion, and culture to inform my work. But sometimes, you need to step outside your routine (and your country) to really see clearly. This trip was a reminder that luxury is about experiences, storytelling, and connection. It’s not just about buying beautiful things, but about living beautifully.

And that’s what I want to create for my clients. Homes that feel curated yet comfortable. Spaces that remind you of your travels, your stories, your strength. Whether it’s a marble countertop that nods to the Vatican, or a cozy kitchen made for rolling ravioli with your grandkids, great design should feel timeless, personal, and a little bit magical.

Italy reminded me of that. And now, I’m back. Recharged, re-inspired, and ready to bring a little la dolce vita into your home.
