A family of four lives in a beautiful home tucked into an Acampo vineyard, and nearly all of it was cherry: dark built-ins, dark fireplace, dark furniture that had seen better days. With two growing boys, and a dad standing 6’6”, they wanted a family room that felt light, fun, and built for actual family life.
The room was long and narrow with an offset fireplace, so centering furniture on it would’ve blocked the door. Instead, we placed the TV beside the fireplace, retired the bulky sectional, and pulled the seating apart to fill the room properly. It now seats seven.
A chaise sofa in stain-resistant gray Crypton serves as what Mom called the infirmary, where a sick kid can stretch out for the day. Two 70-inch caramel leather recliners fit Dad with room to spare. A large round wood coffee table nods to the floors, and the family’s carved wooden states, one for each place they’re from, got a place of honor on the wall.
Before any furniture arrived, the built-ins were painted a fresh gray, iron screens went on the speaker cabinets, and the fireplace was wrapped in large-format ceramic tile. Gauzy ripplefold drapery finishes the windows; when your neighbors are grapevines, you can afford sheer.
