Jon came to us by referral from his neighbors, whose kitchen we’d just finished. He and his sons Trevor and Jack kept their kitchen in pristine condition, but pristine isn’t the same as functional: the dark U-shaped layout was walled off from the living room and couldn’t fit two cooks. Bonus: Jack, who’s interested in construction, did the demolition, framing, rough plumbing, and electrical himself, with a few adults supervising.
With our engineer’s blessing and the right support beams, the wall between the kitchen and living room came down. We closed off the undersized nook windows and installed three large picture windows instead, then relocated the cooktop and double ovens to a new wall where the dining room opening used to be.
Walnut cabinets in a bourbon stain with a slim shaker profile, suede-finish quartz counters, Bosch stainless appliances, and dimensional subway tile. The extra-large island holds the sink, dishwasher, and a drop-down table with four custom seats.
A full-height cabinet bank replaced the old walk-in pantry, joined by pot drawers, dish drawers, a spice drawer under the induction cooktop, and pull-out utensil cabinets. The old pantry became a wallpapered butler’s pantry with a wine chiller.
