5 Fall Essentials that Every Interior Designer will Love

When I was a kid in grade school, I remember having to stand up and tell everyone what I did over the summer. I dreaded it. Running around barefoot with my little brother and eating watermelon slices on the curb never sounded too exciting to me or my class when I was 10 years old, but it sounds heavenly now!

Summer fun is different when you’re an adult, but you can still find things to be crazy about. Here are the exciting things I fell in love with over the summer and will continue to love well into autumn.

My Favorite Rug

I’ve picked HUNDREDS of rugs over the years for my clients, and I generally don’t like to specify the same thing more than once. This makes me run out of choices pretty quickly. I’ve gone through two rug manufacturers (using almost every rug they have) and found a new company this summer: Loloi Rugs.

I’ve known about them for a long time but finally had an opportunity to specify their product over the summer. I absolutely love the rug pictured above. We put it in a master bedroom.

I love it not only because of the beautiful pattern, but I love it even more because of its softness and durability. It’s 100 percent polypropylene with a high-low pile, which means it cleans up easily. Plus, it feels sophisticated and vintage all at once.

My Favorite Podcast

Earlier this year, my good friend and fellow designer turned me onto podcasts. I love the podcast hosted by LuAnn Nigara, A Well Designed Business.  It’s for interior designers (probably not too interesting for you unless you are considering starting an interior design business). LuAnn interviews people who are experts on different topics.

In just about every episode, I learn about a truly actionable step I can take to make my business better.

My Favorite TV Show

I adore science fiction books, shows, and movies. Always have. I’ve been watching Orphan Black since it started five seasons ago and this summer was the series finale.

It starts out with a girl on a subway platform who sees another woman who looks exactly like her. One of the two girls jumps off the platform to her death. The other girl grabs the dead girl’s belongings and assumes her life. I can’t tell you anymore because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but if you haven’t seen it, I strongly recommend it.

It’s the perfect binge-watching weekend show.

My Favorite Plants

Do you ever challenge yourself to get over something that is difficult? This summer I vowed to grow some house plants. I killed a few, except for my succulents. I would pat myself on the back, but I think this type of plant is naturally hard to kill. Hardy and gorgeous—I just love them!

My Favorite Blanket

Throws with giant pompoms were all the rage this summer, and I immediately adored them. We saw this cute one at the Las Vegas Market. Since then I’ve seen pompoms popping up all over Pinterest and the big chain stores. It’s a super fun trend that is easy to follow, and once the trend is over, you can clip the pompoms off and give them to your cat to play with and keep the blanket for your dog.

What did you do over the summer? Leave a comment and tell me all about your summer fun and favorites.  If you can send me a picture of you eating watermelon on the curb, I’ll send you this pillow as a gift.
