How to Re-Design a Guest Bedroom for Free

After re-modeling my kitchen late last year, then re-furnishing my living room and finally re-decorating two bedrooms earlier this year, it became apparent I had many items “left-over” and frankly very little cash “left-over.” Ha!

As an interior designer, I often see that most people don’t realize they have many items already in their homes that could create a great re-design. They just need to forage around their spaces and think outside the box (and we do exactly that during our installations—pulling treasures out of other rooms, closets, garages, or storage units at our clients’ homes).

Here is how I updated a guest bedroom without spending a dime:

This bed frame was purchased nearly 20 years ago from Crate and Barrel and still looks great to this day. I opted to keep it and pull in the extra bedding I had. I love a crisp white bed. The eyelet trimmed top sheet was found at the back of my linen closet. I think I grabbed it a long time ago at an estate sale and didn’t even remember it. The white duvet cover is from IKEA.

The green side table lamps and silk green pillows were once in my master bedroom, and I re-purposed them in the guest room. Placing the lamps atop two end tables (that were in my living room) looks fantastic. Because the Duncan Phyfe table (also an estate sale find) was looking a little rough, I painted it a light gray using Anne Sloan Chalk Paint.

When I gathered all my décor and furniture extras, I realized I had quite a bit of red décor that went well the white, green and gray accents already in my guest room. Sometimes it’s just that easy to pull a room together when you have elements of the same color.

This shell tray is a treasured piece as it belonged to my grandmother. She had it sitting in her living room with little mermaid dolls made of silk. I wasn’t allowed to play with them, but I remember sitting in front of it imagining all sorts of wonderful stories for them as they jumped in and out of their red shell. I later learned that my grandfather made it (a man I never met).

Adding this chest that my son brought home when he completed his time in the U.S. Marine Corps and returned home from his deployment in Iraq reminds me of how blessed I am.

This sweet little chair, throw and rug were left over from other client installations.
