John is an attorney, Alex is a mental health therapist, and with their teenage son Jack (and Baxter the dog), they needed their home to work as hard as they do. The kitchen had a cramped layout that made cooking together impossible, slate floors nobody wanted to maintain, and a leaky corner fireplace in the living room.
We removed the breakfast nook and ran cabinetry across the entire front wall, then took out a load-bearing post, with engineering approval, to open the kitchen to the living room. Deep navy shaker cabinets carry mixed metals: stainless appliances, black plumbing fixtures, gold hardware. A waterfall island seats three, backed by a coffee station, wine bar, and even a dog station for Baxter. The details do the work: Spanish fluted ceramic tile, a Stoll Industries metal hood, a black pot filler recessed in its own niche, and a GE Monogram induction cooktop, safer and faster than the gas it replaced.
The leaky corner fireplace came out, replaced by a linear electric fireplace relocated across the room, which freed up the furniture plan. New engineered hardwood in a lighter finish now runs through the kitchen, living, and dining rooms, and the dining room got a linear chandelier and sconces from Hudson Valley Lighting.
