How to Avoid Losing Storage Space with Open Shelves

A kitchen design trend on the rise includes using replacing upper kitchen cabinets with open shelves. While this may make your kitchen fell less utilitarian, you are sacrificing valuable storage space. …But don’t despair! The best way to avoid losing storage space is to use more smart storage in the lower cabinets.

This is how I did used both open shelving and smart storage in my own home remodel last year.

I wanted the base cabinets to have a streamlined look. I chose a shaker style door, but instead of breaking up the sleek lines, I used full-height doors and no drawers.

“Where does she keep the silverware?” I use roll-out interior drawers and fill them with space organizing cutlery, utensil, and gadget trays. Everything is easy to reach, and I no longer have to dig wayyyy back into a drawer to find the melon baller.

I’ve had this yellow beast of a KitchenAid mix-master for a good long while. The yellow doesn’t go well with my new kitchen (but there is no way I’m getting rid of it), so using this pop-up shelf was a no-brainer. All I have to do is pull out, pop it up and mix away. In the case I make great use of storage space and avoid losing valuable countertop space!

In my old kitchen, my pots and pans were in a corner lazy Susan base cabinet (and what a pain that was!). The pots were stacked all willy-nilly and finding the right lid was a juggling act. In my new kitchen, all the pans nicely line up with the corresponding lid nestling neatly next to them. Hallelujah!
