How to Design a Beautiful Custom Sofa for Your Home

At KTJ Design Co., we customize our clients’ sofas based on what we discover during our Remodel Clarity Session with them. Our seven step process ensures that their new custom sofa will function flawlessly while adding to the design of their new space. (not sure what style of sofa you like, read this blog to get an idea)

Our Custom Sofa Design Process

Step 1: Size

We begin the custom sofa design process by determining your ideal sofa size. (Generally 84” sofas work best.) Next, we decide if you want one, two, or three seat cushions. (I prefer two seat cushions because it is rare that three people will sit next to each other on a sofa.)

Step 2: Seat depth

Seat depth can be standard or extended, depending on your height. If you’re short, you don’t want your legs dangling over the edge, but if you’re tall, you don’t want your knees bunched up to your chest.

Step 3: Seat cushions

Seat cushions are either a T-Front or Straight. A T-front feels more casual and is a popular choice.

Step 4: Sofa arms

The biggest element to determine the personality of your sofa are the arms. You can have a sock arm, shirred panel arm, pleated arm, recessed panel arm, English arm, or track arm. The most popular are sock arms or track arms.

Step 5: Sofa skirt

Skirt or no skirt? You can get the sofa base skirted or banded, depending on your preference. A banded base will reveal the leg of the sofa, whereas a skirt will conceal the leg. (On a side note, sofa legs and feet include the following styles: bun foot, wedge foot, tapered leg, or turned leg.)

Step 6: Back cushions

Coming around to the back cushions, we select either a tight back or loose back with a knife edge or box edge. A tight back means the cushions is sewn in place. A loose back is better because you can fluff the pillows (we teach you how to do this when we install your sofa – it’s a well-guarded secret!) and easily replace them if needed.

Step 7: Fabric and finishes

The last step in our custom sofa design process is selecting the upholstery fabric and leg / foot finish. From leathers to florals and everything in between, the step is your chance to showcase your personality through design.

There are many decisions to make when you design a custom sofa. Our team at KTJ Design Co., will make it easy and exciting. Book a consultation with us today.

As much as you love your couch, it can be a real obstacle to your living room design. After all, you probably don’t want to have to rearrange furniture every time you need to sit down so I’ll prefer to go at https://www.kinnay.com/ for best sofa legs and other furniture. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to update your existing couch without having to get rid of it.
