When Larry and Pam Knapp reached out to us at KTJ Design Co., they had one request: turn their outdated guest bathroom into something unforgettable. As a retired educator and an attorney, they brought both curiosity and decisiveness to the table. They also brought a mirror.
Not just any mirror, but one with a floral border and a hummingbird mid-flight. Whimsical. Sweet. And entirely too literal.
Pam loved the idea of a bathroom with a nature-inspired theme, and the hummingbird mirror had captured her imagination. But as we began talking through the space, it became clear that the mirror was more of a starting point than a design direction. What she truly wanted was a guest bathroom that felt like an escape, something that evoked a lush, calming forest, but still fit the refined elegance of the Knapps’ home.
Our mission: transform this bathroom into a luxurious, layered space with a nod to nature and just the right amount of whimsy.
Listening Between the Lines

Early conversations with Larry and Pam revealed a key insight. They didn’t want something trendy or expected. They wanted something that felt personal. The idea of a forest theme wasn’t about pinecones or cabin kitsch, it was about creating a place of retreat and calm.
They imagined their guests stepping into the bathroom and feeling transported, but still grounded in timeless design. Our objectives became clear:
- Reconfigure the layout to enhance function and add a makeup vanity
- Honor the forest theme while avoiding anything juvenile or cartoonish
- Use color, texture, and materials to create a true “wow” moment
The Layout Dilemma (And a Clever Closet Heist)

The original bathroom layout lacked both beauty and brains. The sink was tucked in an awkward position and the room didn’t allow for a makeup area which was something Pam really wanted for visiting family and guests.
We proposed a simple yet game-changing solution: relocate the sink to the opposite wall to improve the flow and create a balanced layout. This freed up space where we could create a built-in vanity niche, giving the bathroom a boutique-hotel feel.
Where did we find the extra square footage? From a coat closet in the adjacent hallway. By borrowing that space, we carved out the perfect vanity alcove without changing the bathroom’s footprint. It was one of those “why didn’t anyone do this years ago?” design moments.
Let’s Talk Forest Without the Fairy Tale

Once we solved the floor plan puzzle, it was time to get into the fun stuff: finishes, fixtures, and features.
We started with a palette inspired by a walk through the woods at golden hour. Deep forest greens, rich terracotta, warm gold, and grounding black tones came together to create a color story that felt both earthy and elegant.
To ground the space, we selected a marble mosaic tile floor (classic, timeless, and durable). The soft pattern brought texture without overpowering the design, and the natural stone reinforced our “forest meets refinement” concept.
But the real showstopper? A hand-tiled mural above the tub in a lush, tropical motif. Think of it as a modern fresco. The mural is saturated with color and movement and just enough wild energy to feel immersive. It was our nod to the whimsical idea that first sparked the project, translated into something elevated and unexpected.
A Textured, Layered Approach

To keep the space from feeling too flat or too theme-heavy, we layered in textures and finishes. The vanity wall features a subtle terracotta wallpaper with a barely-there botanical pattern adding warmth and movement without competing with the mural.
Lighting was especially important. We chose sculptural fixtures with a golden finish that added glamour without going too glam. The fixtures helped define the vanity area and gave the room a touch of that glow you only get in well-designed hotels.
The cabinetry was painted a muted green with undertones of slate. This color is earthy, calm, and perfectly in tune with the palette. We kept the lines clean and added brass hardware for a refined finish. Every element had to earn its place and contribute to the overall story.
Convincing the Clients (Yes, We Ditched the Mirror)

Design is as much about communication as creativity, and one of our early challenges was helping the Knapps move beyond the hummingbird mirror.
It took some gentle guidance and a few visual mood boards to show Pam and Larry that they could still honor the spirit of that piece without being beholden to it. Once they saw the potential in a more sophisticated interpretation of the forest theme, they were all in.
We reassured them: we weren’t abandoning the idea. We were elevating it.
And in the end, that original mirror found a new home in their garden shed where it still gets to flutter among the flowers, just not on the bathroom wall.
The Reveal: A Room That Surprises and Delights
When Larry and Pam saw the finished bathroom for the first time, their reactions were exactly what we’d hoped for.
Pam stepped in, turned around, and said, “It feels like a secret garden only grown up.” Larry, ever the pragmatist, commented on how well everything functioned and then admitted the lighting made him look better than expected in the mirror.
Their guests now get to enjoy a bathroom that surprises and delights, with thoughtful features at every turn and a visual story that unfolds as you move through the space.
Why This Project Matters
This wasn’t just a guest bathroom. It was an opportunity to tell a story through design rooted in nature, elevated by intention, and guided by a firm belief that function and fantasy can live in harmony.
Enchanted Escape is a reminder that even the most unexpected themes, like a whimsical forest, can be translated into something refined, elegant, and deeply personal.
It’s a space that makes you pause, breathe, and maybe even smile at the memory of a hummingbird mirror that started it all.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a forest-inspired bathroom remodel?
A forest-inspired bathroom remodel incorporates nature-based colors, textures, and materials such as green cabinetry, natural stone, botanical patterns, and layered lighting to create a calming, organic retreat without feeling overly themed.
How do you make a themed bathroom feel sophisticated?
The key is restraint. Use elevated materials like marble, custom tile, and refined lighting instead of literal décor. Focus on texture, color palette, and craftsmanship to express the theme in a subtle, timeless way.
Can you add a vanity to a small bathroom without expanding it?
Yes. Creative space planning, such as borrowing square footage from adjacent closets or reconfiguring plumbing locations, can allow for added functionality without increasing the footprint.
What makes an NKBA award-winning bathroom design?
NKBA award-winning designs are recognized for excellence in creativity, space planning, functionality, material selection, and overall visual impact.
