How to Style Your Home like an Interior Designer
If you want a beautiful home but aren’t quite ready to hire an interior designer, here are my best room-by-room design tips for making your home look professionally designed. I have a heart for those who choose to DIY their home. With a little guidance, you can go a long way in making your space unique and inspiring.
A Professionally Designed Foyer

Wallpaper is a trending right now and in a big way! This is because there are SO many beautiful wallpaper patterns available (we have lots of wallpaper books in our showroom for you to browse). If you aren’t ready to commit to wallpapering every room in your house (still have those nightmares from the 80’s when your Mom went wallpaper crazy, huh?), then putting wallpaper in your foyer can truly make that entrance to your home stand-out and welcome your guests. Look for large patterned wallpaper either in a geometric print or floral pattern to get all sorts of “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” on your designer prowess.
A Professionally Designed Living Room
Most folks these days are going for solid surface flooring and forgoing the wall to wall broadloom carpet. Fortunately, the best inspiration for your entire living room design could start with an area rug. Many designers start their design from the floor up. By starting with the area rug, you can pull colors for paint, furniture, and accessories, making the whole room feel pulled together and professionally designed.
A Professionally Designed Dining Room
It’s difficult for some of my clients to figure out how to design their open concept kitchen/dining room/family room because there are no walls to delineate the space. We like to define the dining room with a large chandelier or pendant. Look for one with distinct layers of lighting. Place this light fixture over a big wood dining room table and upholstered chairs. This clearly marks an area of the multi-purpose room as “dining” and makes family dinner time special.
A Professionally Designed Kitchen
In our latest kitchen remodel, the homeowner commented, “well I guess stainless steel is the only option for appliances.” Luckily for her (and now I’m sharing it with you) GE Café has a white appliance package that has the most fabulous handles and knobs in bronze, gold, black and stainless steel. The white finish looks like glass (but has a matte finish – AKA no finger prints) and at an affordable price point, your kitchen can look so unique. Ditch those bifold closet doors (or worst yet, bypass mirrored closet doors) and replace them with barn doors. But when I say barn doors I don’t mean a wood that looks like an old barn. I mean barn door hardware with a standard style door. You’ll need to have the space on at least one side of the closet opening to stack the doors, but it creates a chic vibe. I have found the best prices and selections for barn doors at Home Depot (ek – did I just say Home Depot!).
