Why You Need to Hire a Kitchen Designer

Once upon a time there was a man and a woman who hated their kitchen. It had ugly cabinets, outdated appliances, beige tile with black, grungy grout and they were over it. Instead of living with this gross mess indefinitely or living with the dust and debris of changing it out one piece at a time, they just wanted a whole new kitchen.

Sound familiar? You might be thinking about remodeling your kitchen and you’re wondering if you need a kitchen designer because basically you could do it on your own. How hard can it be? They do it all the time on the home improvement shows and it looks easy, right? Or you could run over to the big box stores and have them help you out. That’s what all your FaceBook friends did!

HOLD UP. Before you head to the big orange box store, let me tell you the process that we go through when we design a kitchen. Spoiler alert – it’s not what you might think.

The Most Important Part of a Kitchen Design

There are so many details that go into a kitchen design! At the end of this blog I’m going to give you a checklist to download. This list has 60 lines of items you need to consider – 60 decisions that you have to make. SIXTY! And that’s just the physical items that go into the kitchen.

But believe it or not, that is not the most important part of kitchen design.

In order to design your kitchen I have to understand a lot of things about YOU.

I have to know your lifestyle
I need to know how you live
I need to know what you are going to do in your kitchen
I need to know what your needs are

There’s so many different kinds of kitchens: Outdoor Kitchens; Chef’s Kitchens; Cook’s Kitchens; Baker’s Kitchens; and Private Kitchens.

Obviously you’re not going to have 5 different kitchens in your home, but I need to know how you cook because each of these type of kitchens have very different types of criteria and they’re all extremely important.

There’s so much that goes into a kitchen design and so many questions that need to be answered. Have you considered all of them? For example, what are the dynamics of each cook in your kitchen and is it all going to blend so that everybody can use the room? Or will you be stuck hating your tiny cooktop because you gave up all the space so your husband could get fit in that wine fridge?

Nowadays with all the cooking shows, we are inspired to become our own little chefs and how we cook has become so much more than in the past. Let’s use appliances for example. You may want fine quality commercial-inspired appliances because we do have a whole new way of cooking.

Kitchen Design is More Than Putting Boxes on the Walls

Designing your kitchen is so much more than just putting boxes on the walls. It’s not just the fundamentals of the cabinets and appliances and the sinks and the faucets and the countertop and all the other stuff that goes into it. Sure they are important, but if it doesn’t integrate seamlessly with your home and if it doesn’t integrate with your lifestyle, then no matter how beautiful the granite countertop is, you are going to eventually hate it!

Remodeling your kitchen is a big commitment – even if you decide to go the Home Cheapo route, you are going to fork out some dough {pun intended}. A lot of times when I come into your home for a consultation and you tell me that you hate their kitchen because of the ugly cabinets and outdated appliances, more often than not what you really hate is that it doesn’t function very well. Yeah, sure, I will make your kitchen look beautiful but I also make sure that it functions and flows and is going to make you happy.

Having the most gorgeous white cabinets and Carrera marble countertop isn’t what’s going to make you happy.

What’s Going to Make You Happy In Your Kitchen Design

What’s going to make you happy with your kitchen is that it fundamentally meets all your needs and if you’re not on top of all the latest in technology and if you don’t have the experience and the talent of a designer I’m sorry to tell you, you’re going to make a lot of mistakes.

Don’t make those mistakes! Hire a designer that has expertise in kitchen design and get it right the first time. Hiring a designer for your kitchen is going to cost you a few thousand bucks, but it’s going to save you so much money in the long run (not only in dollars, but in peace of mind).
