7 IKEA Decor Trends for Better or Worse
I first discovered IKEA 20 years ago. I worked in San Francisco at the time with the public accounting firm Deloitte and would commute into the city every Sunday. With each trip, I would pass this giant blue and yellow building and wonder what it was. Finally, curiosity got the better of me.
If you’ve ever been to IKEA, you know it’s an experience like no other. I’ve purchased and assembled my fair share of IKEA furniture, so when Apartment Therapyposted this article, 7 Trends That Will Be Huge In 2019 – According to the IKEA Catalog, I was intrigued.
You can read the post here. According to Apartment Therapy, you will soon see these trends everywhere:
-
Monochromatic decor
-
Imperfect polka dots
-
Hexagons
-
Dusty rose color palettes
-
Dark gray instead of black
-
Oversized florals
-
Non artwork

Monochromatic (Tone on Tone) Decor
We love designing monochromatic rooms, but one rule to keep in mind with a monochromatic room is that you need to add some texture and pattern. This tone on tone room is a lovely color, but too many soft surfaces and no pattern make it dull. Don’t copy this look.

Imperfect Polka Dots
I do like this polka dot rug, but is it trend-worthy? Maybe. And whether they are perfect or not, well – a little whimsey does go a long way. Do copy this trend (especially if you have a Dalmatian).

Hexagons
Hexagon tiles are nothing new and have already hit the trend watch with many designers. I adore this geometric shape and will be installing a hexagon tile on the floor of my new boutique furniture store set to open this fall (stay tuned). Do copy this trend.

A Dustier Take on Blush
Blush is another trend that has been around for the past few years. There are many designers who say its day has passed, but I love blush (see how I did this little girls’ room here) and am happy to see it stick around for a little while longer (or forever). Do copy this trend.

Dark Gray is the New Black
Nope, my clients are tiring of gray and I don’t see dark gray being the new black. The first thing I hear from new clients is, “I don’t want gray.” It’s a trend that is waning. Don’t copy this trend.

Over-the-Top Florals
Yes, yes, yes. This is big on the trend watch and was all over the recent designer markets. I think it is an excellent trend and can’t wait to cover a wall, a bed, or drapery with big and bold florals.
When I was about 7 years old, I visited my grandparents’ beach house in Santa Barbara for the first time and was in awe of the guest room, which was decorated in a chintz with giant pink roses. The wallpaper, the bedding, the drapery – it all matched. I thought it was the most beautiful room in the whole world. Do copy this trend.

Non-Art Artwork
Oh please. This is a trend that comes and goes every now and then. I think it’s a cute idea if you are in your first home or apartment and don’t have enough money to get “real” artwork. Pick up some frames at garage sales or thrift stores, paint them all matching colors, and put them on the wall helter-skelter like.
You could also find an old window and apply the same treatment — a cute idea. Do copy this look if you’re short on cash.
Design Trends Summed Up
There you have it – all the trends summed up for us by IKEA. At first I wanted to hate them all, but as I looked at them closely, I like the majority of them.
If you want a design that isn’t based on a trend but speaks to your personality, let the designers at KTJ Design Co. create a design that is uniquely your own.
